Magma Maths uses artificial intelligence to support formative feedback and personalised learning in mathematics.

We recognise that schools must be confident that any AI used in the classroom is safe, transparent, and compliant with UK regulations. Our AI systems have been reviewed against the Department for Education (DfE) Generative AI Product Safety Standards for Schools and Colleges (England), alongside UK GDPR and safeguarding requirements.

AI in Magma is designed to support teachers -  never replace them.

Our Commitment to Safe AI Use in Schools:

1. AI Supports Learning - It Does Not Make High-Stakes Decisions

  • AI provides formative guidance and progressive hints.
  • It does not assign grades or determine attainment.
  • Teachers retain full visibility of pupil activity and progress.
  • Schools can opt out of AI features entirely.

Magma’s AI is built to encourage thinking, not complete work on behalf of pupils.

2. Alignment with DfE Generative AI Product Safety Standards

We have reviewed our systems against the DfE’s Generative AI Product Safety Standards and implemented safeguards across the following areas:

Safeguarding & Human Oversight

  • Learner-facing AI includes embedded content filtering and contextual moderation.
  • High-risk safeguarding disclosures are escalated to the school’s Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).
  • A documented mental health crisis response protocol is in place.
  • AI reinforces real-world human support and avoids encouraging emotional dependence.

Human adults remain responsible for safeguarding decisions at all times.

Responsible AI Behaviour
Magma’s AI is intentionally designed to behave as a tool, not as a person.

  • AI-generated content is clearly identifiable.
  • The system avoids anthropomorphism or implied personhood.
  • No manipulative or persuasive design techniques are used (e.g. flattery, behavioural steering, emotional pressure).
  • Technical guardrails help prevent misuse or attempts to bypass safety filters.

Data Protection & Privacy
Magma is compliant with UK data protection legislation and aligned with key UK safeguarding standards, including:

  • UK GDPR
  • Data Protection Act 2018
  • ICO Children’s Code
  • Cyber Security Standards for Schools and Colleges

Key commitments:

  • Data is stored in UK/EU infrastructure (AWS Frankfurt region).
  • All data is encrypted in transit and at rest.
  • Pupil data is never used for marketing or commercial profiling.
  • School data is not used to train external large language models.
  • AI sub-processors are contractually prohibited from using school data to improve their own models.
  • Personal data is deleted from live systems within 30 days of contract termination.

Schools remain the data controller at all times.

3. Transparency & Control for Schools
We believe schools should always remain in control of technology used in their classrooms.

  • AI features are optional.
  • Schools can request documentation to support DPIAs.
  • Sub-processors are disclosed in our Data Processing Agreement.
  • Safeguarding contact details can be updated at any time.
  • Deletion confirmation is available upon request.

We are committed to transparency and open dialogue with school leaders, MATs and local authorities.

Security & Infrastructure
Magma operates on secure AWS EU infrastructure and maintains:

  • Role-based access controls
  • Annual penetration testing
  • Continuous monitoring and logging
  • Incident detection and response procedures
  • Regular vulnerability scanning

We notify schools without undue delay in the event of a personal data breach.

Designed for Education - Not Adapted from Consumer AI
Magma’s AI has been built specifically for classroom use. It is not a repurposed consumer chatbot.

Our system is designed to:

  • Support mathematical reasoning
  • Encourage learner attempt before additional guidance
  • Reinforce teacher-led instruction
  • Prioritise safeguarding and age-appropriate interactions
